Recently, BASF has increased its investment in the shoe material market worldwide and opened new shoe material development centers in the United States and Thailand. The company also plans to start operating a new shoe material innovation center in Taiwan in 2020 and expand the shoe material development center in Italy.
The newly opened shoe material development center in the United States is located in Wyandotte, where the company's North American business is located, and the center was put into use in April 2019. Pete Zorney, BASF's North American Consumer Business Director, said: “This place is already a global R&D center for BASF's other businesses, so it is reasonable to include the shoe material part in it.”
The goal of the two new shoe material development centers is to interact with customers and help them innovate in the footwear field faster. BASF has added two new positions in its shoe material development center in Wyandotte. BASF currently employs more than 2,200 employees in Michigan, USA, and more than 20,000 employees in North America (including Central America and the Caribbean).
Technically choose the most advanced machines: a Desma low-pressure injection molding machine and a Gusbi low-pressure injection machine. Zorney said that the Desma low-pressure injection molding machine "utilizes the latest polyurethane injection technology, allows multiple systems to be injected into the same tank, is equipped with a moving device for adding pigments, and an additive device for multi-system development.
He mentioned: "There is also a Gusbi low-pressure perfusion machine. It also uses the latest and greatest technology to make complete shoes or boots, and is equipped with molds for part testing."
Michael Krupa, technical manager of BASF, said: "There is nothing in the shoe material industry that is constant. It is a long-term competition to develop new technologies and predict new trends and changing needs." For example, adidas and NIKE are both BASF. An important partner of BASF, choosing BASF as a partner is because of its R&D capabilities in shoe materials, which are the "soul" of shoes.
He added that in the new shoe material development center, BASF can produce complete shoes so that they can be tested with customers there.
